Cliff Andrew "DocBear" Starts Another Adventure

Cliff Andew Starts Another Adventure

  July 31, 2015 - August 16, 2015DocBear Close up

Cliff Andrews, "DocBear", former president of SRLT Board of Directors once again takes to the Appalachian Trail to benefit SRLT and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.

In his words:

"Over the years as a physician I have developed an understanding of the importance of physical exercise in health; as a naturalist, a sense of wonder in our natural world; and as local land trust president, an appreciation of the importance of preserving remaining wild and natural areas. Each summer I take a couple of weeks off from doctoring to pursue challenging outdoor activities, immersing myself in the wonders of nature, and raising both awareness and much-needed funds for conservation.

Consequently, in the past 12 years with 5 marathons, 4 bike rides, and 3 backpacking trips I have raised over $75,000 for both the Scenic Rivers Land Trust, which has now preserved over 3000 acres of natural areas, and for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, which protects and maintains a 2200 mile rustic footpath from Georgia to Maine along America’s eastern spine.

Three years ago I started a 10-year planned section hike along the entire 2200-mile Appalachian Trail: in 2012 from Springer Mountain Georgia to North Carolina, in 2013 from North Carolina to Tennessee, and in 2014 from Tennessee to Virginia. This summer, I plan to pick up where I left off last year, backpacking 200 miles from Bland VA to the Blue Ridge Parkway. I will carry everything I need on my back (food, water, sleeping bag & tent) hiking between 12-15 miles per day from July 31 through August 16 joining up with my brother along the way.  I plan to eventually complete this journey atop Mount Katahdin in Maine on my 75th birthday on September 10, 2021.

I am making this trek in effort to raise $7500 for preservation of wilderness areas. I am seeking 100 pledges of $25 (12.5¢/mi); 50 pledges of $50 (25¢/mi); and 25 pledges of $100 (50¢/mi). I am asking that you please consider making a tax-deductible contribution either directly by credit card on the secure websites below, or by check to either or both of the following conservation organizations:
The Scenic Rivers Land Trust, Attn: Dr Andrew’s Fundraiser
Appalachian Trail Conservancy, Attn: Dr Andrew’s Fundraiser
